That’s short for dramatic. No other genre has been as universally ignored by audiences and embraced by critics. When people wonder why the Oscars suck, it’s because they nominated a bunch of self-important dramas that nobody saw. And the reason nobody saw them is because the trailers for dramatic films always contain the following: period garb, biographical stories of pop culture icons, stories with a strong liberal agenda, emotional scores, Peter Gabriel songs, mentally challenged people, people with cancer, poor people trying to get by, rich people who are unhappy, alcoholics, drug users, prostitutes, people crying, people looking off in the distance crying, people standing in the rain crying, based on the best-selling novel, the phrase: “Inspired by a true story,” actors trying to win an Oscar, actors trying to win another Oscar, Meryl Streep, and oh, did we mention OSCAR!?
